artist statement

a dialogue with the environment

I make prints, paintings, films and installations that investigate my connection to the landscape at the coast. I work with local materials such as earth pigments, seaweed and rocks and often co-create with the environment, for example, by placing works in the sea. In this way I intend to establish a connection with place in the work itself.

My coastal pilgrimages began as a child and the excitement, feeling of aliveness and freedom of escaping from the everyday continue today. I am interested in the ways in which humans connect to the environment at the coast and how we look at and use these spaces.

My work connects to themes of time, embodied landscape and the interconnectedness of nature. I am interested in exploring the geology and environmental uncertainty of specific places, by focusing on its materiality and environmental changes that may be present such as coastal erosion. I want to give my audience an opportunity to reconsider our place in these liminal spaces where the land meets the sea. I like to have a sense of uncertainty and ambiguity in my work that leaves an openness for interpretation and space for the viewer to reflect. I hope to find ways to see the familiar in a different way.
